Background of the Study
Point-of-Sale (POS) systems are crucial in ensuring accurate and efficient transaction processing in the banking sector. Wema Bank has undertaken a systematic calibration of its POS systems to improve transactional accuracy and reduce errors that affect both operational efficiency and customer satisfaction (Adebayo, 2023). This calibration process involves routine technical assessments, software updates, and the alignment of hardware components to meet standardized performance benchmarks. By fine-tuning these systems, Wema Bank aims to achieve a higher level of consistency in transaction processing, minimize discrepancies, and enhance overall service reliability.

The initiative is driven by the recognition that even minor inaccuracies in POS systems can lead to significant financial discrepancies and customer complaints. Advanced calibration techniques, which integrate real-time monitoring and predictive analytics, enable the bank to detect and rectify errors promptly (Chinwe, 2024). This proactive approach not only reduces the frequency of system failures but also contributes to cost savings by lowering the need for manual interventions and maintenance. Moreover, improved POS accuracy has a direct impact on the bank’s reputation, fostering greater trust among customers who rely on these systems for everyday transactions.

While the benefits of POS system calibration are clear, challenges such as integration with older terminal models, periodic technical glitches, and the need for continuous staff training persist. These challenges underscore the importance of establishing robust calibration protocols that can adapt to both technological advancements and operational demands. This study examines the effect of POS system calibration on transactional accuracy at Wema Bank, aiming to identify key success factors and recommend strategies to overcome existing challenges.

Statement of the Problem
Despite systematic calibration efforts, Wema Bank continues to encounter issues affecting the transactional accuracy of its POS systems. One major problem is the inconsistency in calibration across different branches, largely due to the varying age and condition of POS hardware (Ibrahim, 2023). This variability results in frequent discrepancies during transaction processing, leading to customer complaints and potential financial losses. Moreover, integration challenges between modern calibration software and legacy terminal models can cause delays in error detection and resolution (Nwankwo, 2024).

Additionally, technical glitches, such as software lags and intermittent connectivity issues, further compromise the accuracy of transactions. The bank also faces challenges in ensuring that frontline staff are adequately trained to operate the calibrated systems and respond promptly to any anomalies. These operational gaps not only affect day-to-day performance but also erode customer trust in the bank’s digital transaction capabilities. Consequently, while calibration initiatives are designed to improve accuracy, persistent technical and operational challenges hinder their full effectiveness. This study seeks to analyze these issues and propose actionable recommendations to enhance the overall calibration process and improve transactional accuracy.

Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the impact of POS system calibration on transactional accuracy at Wema Bank.

  • To identify technical and operational challenges affecting POS performance.

  • To recommend strategies for enhancing calibration protocols and system reliability.

Research Questions

  • How does POS system calibration affect transactional accuracy at Wema Bank?

  • What technical and operational challenges impede effective calibration?

  • What measures can improve the calibration process and overall system performance?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Regular POS system calibration significantly improves transactional accuracy at Wema Bank.

  • H2: Integration issues with legacy hardware negatively affect calibration outcomes.

  • H3: Enhanced training and proactive maintenance are positively correlated with reduced transaction errors.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the calibration processes of Wema Bank’s POS systems, drawing on technical reports, maintenance logs, and employee feedback. Limitations include variability in hardware conditions across branches and rapid technological advancements affecting calibration standards.

Definitions of Terms

  • POS System Calibration: The process of adjusting and fine-tuning point-of-sale systems to ensure accurate transaction processing.

  • Transactional Accuracy: The precision with which financial transactions are processed without errors.

  • Legacy Hardware: Older POS terminal models that may not fully support modern calibration techniques.

  • Proactive Maintenance: Scheduled maintenance activities aimed at preventing system failures.
